Our client is a behavioral health clinic located within a large urban hospital system.

Challenge:

Due to the cumbersome nature of Behavioral Health billing and reimbursement, the clinic was unable to perform accurate third-party billing, which led to low cash collections. As a result of low cash collections, the hospital could not provide the appropriate registration and billing staff, compounding their cash collection dilemma.

Medical Account Solutions was contracted to increase cash collections through the overhaul of the entire billing and registration areas of the behavioral health clinic.

Solution:

Medical Account Solutions handled all facets of registration, billing, and collections, with detailed analysis and timely monthly reporting which enabled the clinic to receive much needed grant dollars. This was achieved by:

  • Initially creating a substantial interface between the hospital system’s patient financial accounting system and our proprietary billing and collection system
  • Providing an on-site staff of 18 individuals consisting of registration and financial intake specialists, who registered patients into the clinic’s financial system and verified insurance coverage, answered patient inquiries regarding billing, and captured patient financial information so the hospital could complete Medicaid and/or Charity Care applications
  • Transferring patient demographic, financial, and clinical information on a daily basis to Medical Account Solutions for billing, follow-up and collections

Results:

Cash collections for the Behavioral Health Clinic increased from $500,000 per year prior to Medical Account Solutions involvement to between $14,000,000 and $18,000,000 per year consistently. The clinic enjoyed an increase of grant funds as a direct result of Medical Account Solutions’ ability to provide customized comprehensive financial reports.
